Torrance, CA – The Governor’s May Revision of his January Budget Proposals was released on May 14. While the overall budget proposal reflects continued negative economic trends and a now-estimated $19 billion shortfall, the level of cuts to school districts remain much the same as January.
In March, in response to the Governor’s January budget proposal, the TUSD Board of Education, with tremendous frustration, approved $27.6 million in reductions and one-time balance transfers over the next two budgetary years. The Board was forced to cut another 185 positions, on top of the 258 that had already been cut over the past two years.
Subsequent to the Governor’s May Revision, the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office released its overview of the May Revision with its own recommendations. The Assembly Democrats also released their alternative to the Governor’s May Revisions. Dubbed “The California Jobs Budget,” their alternative proposal includes additional taxes and funds above the Governor’s proposed funding level for K-14 education.
The State’s 2010-2011 budget is a long way from enactment. A difficult fight in the Legislature over priorities and budget cuts is expected. While we are uncertain when the state budget will be adopted and how different it will be, TUSD must move forward with its mandated budgetary process and adopt a balanced budget by the June 30 deadline.
Once the state adopts its budget, the TUSD Board of Education will host a budget workshop, giving parents and community members the opportunity to provide their feedback. As we move forward in the budget process, we will continue to provide budget updates to our stakeholders.
