WHAT IS GOING ON?

Spring Pictures ~ Spring pictures went home last Wednesday. If you want to keep them, you must pay for them. If you do not want them, please return them to the school office by Friday, May 18, 2012.

Lunch Purchases ~ Effective June 4, 2012, students will not be allowed to “borrow” any money for lunch. They will need to bring cash or have money in their accounts. If you have an account set up on www.myschoolbucks.com your can check the status of it from home. Any money remaining on the account at the end of the year will be available for your child to use next year even if they transition to middle school.

Third Grade Brochures ~ Mrs. Grock’s class made brochures about Torrance for the 100th birthday of the city and they are on display at the Kathy Geissert Library.

5th Grade Information ~ The 5th grade panoramic picture will be re-taken on Tuesday morning, May 22. Also, Richardson is hosting a Parent Night on Tuesday, May 22 in their café at 6:30 p.m. to share information about your child’s matriculation to middle school. Multicultural Night ~ This fun-filled event is occurring on May 24th from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Please join us!

Portfolio Day ~ This will occur on May 30th, so please put it on your calendar. You will have an opportunity to spend time with your child or children to have lunch and reflect on this school year. You will also be able to see Adventures in Art projects, Magic of Music, and gear up for summer reading at the Book Fair. Check out the link for suggested lists grades K-6. (Flyer)

Celebrate Walteria ~ Walteria’s Academic Alliance (WAA) is having its annual Casino Night on June 1, 2012 at South End Racquet & Health Club. There will also be a silent auction. The proceeds from this event go directly to WAA which helps keep our technology upgraded. Please put this on your calendar. (Flyer, Sponsorship)

South Bay Summer Enrichment Academy ~ Registration is underway for the fourth year of South Bay Enrichment Academy’s summer school. This is a tuition-based summer school program through the combined efforts of the Torrance Education Foundation (TEF) and the Torrance Unified School District (TUSD). Arlington and Arnold are the elementary school locations and the dates and times are June 25 through July 29, 2012 from 8:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Classes are available for incoming K through 5 grade students in the South Bay Area. You most likely have received a catalogue in the mail, but you also can go on-line at www.tefsbea.org to obtain information.

MORE IMPROVEMENTS

Sharefest ~ Thanks to this wonderful organization, improvements to our campus were made last week. If you have had an opportunity to stop in, you have seen them.

Fun Run ~ This was another successful event held by PTA. First place winners received a digital camera donated by General Imaging Company and five front of the line lunch passes. They are: Melanie Alexander-1st grade, Austin Green-2nd grade, DJ Pierson-3rd grade, Christian Vaccaro-4th grade, and Leo Tavormina-5th grade. Second place winners received a box of art supplies donated by Staples. They are: Aidan Green-kindergarten, Annelise Skinner-1st grade, Colin Fisher-2nd grade, Stephanie Alexander-3rd grade, Nate Zimmerman-4th grade, and Garrett Tsumaki-5th grade. Many more prizes were given to students who collected $15.00 or more.

Trash Creation Carnival ~ The winners of this Earth Week event are: Katherine Gloyer-kindergarten, Len Sakimukai-1st grade, Julie Kim-2nd grade, Trenton Mickley-3rd grade, Baron Gaunt-4th grade, and Emma Gloyer-5th grade.

Chorus Concert ~ The Spring Chorus Concert will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 immediately following a PTA Association meeting scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. in our café. Please join us. Our student body will see the chorus perform at our Monday assembly.

Multicultural Night ~ This fun-filled evening is Thursday, May 24, 2012 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. This is a wonderful way to learn about different cultures. (Info, Chili Info)

Standardized Testing: Students in grades 2-5 will be taking their standardized tests May 7-11 and May 14-17, 2012. Like always, your child should get a good night’s sleep and eat breakfast and we ask that you NOT schedule doctor and dental appointments during the morning hours during this time.

Kindergarten Round-up for the 2012/2013 school year ~ Two more Kindergarten Round-ups will be held May 7th and Monday, May 14th. This is an opportunity for parents/guardians to pre-enroll for fall, become acquainted with our kindergarten staff, and obtain information about being involved in your child’s school experience. Additionally, this gives us the opportunity to meet your child and perhaps answer your questions about your child’s readiness for kindergarten.

To enroll in kindergarten your child must be 5 years old by November 1, 2012 per state law. If your child’s fifth birthday falls between November 2 and December 2, 2012, he/she will be eligible to attend Transitional Kindergarten and should still attend Round-up. TUSD is planning on having Transitional Kindergarten at this time, but this could change based on the state’s financial circumstances, TUSD’s budget, and direction from the state or county. Please make sure to schedule your Round-up appointment if you have a child who will turn five on or before December 2, 2012. If you know of someone else was has a child that will be five by December 2, 2012, please share this information.

School Site Council ~ If you have not already done so, please take a moment to complete the ballot that was sent home last week and return it with your child to his/her teacher or the office by Friday, May 4, 2012.

Progress Reports ~ This is the half-way point of the third trimester and they will be sent home on Friday, May 4, 2012.

Record Your Volunteer Hours!

ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS

Please help the Walteria PTA Historian keep track of the volunteer hours completed at our school.

Every year, the PTA Historian has the daunting task of tallying all the volunteer hours to include in the Unit Annual Report. The Walteria PTA would appreciate your help with this task. Please take a few minutes each month to email the number of volunteer hours you completed that month to our Historian, Yvonne Beck at

historian@walteriaelementary.org

As a “thank you” for taking the extra time to email your volunteer hours, your name will be included in the “Thank You” raffle held by the Walteria PTA 3 times per school year. The second winner will be announced the week of May 7^th. The final winner will be announced the week of June 4^th.

Please include your full name and contact information (either phone or email) when you submit your volunteer hours so we can get in touch with the winner of the raffle.

Relay for Life ~ This event gets underway at 9:00 a.m. at SHS on Saturday, April 28th and goes for 24 hours to raise money for the fight against cancer.

Sharefest ~ This wonderful organization is comprised of community people who dedicate a day to beautify campuses. Walteria’s Sharefest projects got underway last weekend with our parking lot being slurry coated and re-striped. They also put a slurry coat on our Kindergarten asphalt and three hopscotch games. This Saturday they will be painting the Kindergarten and primary yard play structures, adding games to the new asphalt in the primary yard, installing two basketball hoops and painting a tricycle path and a “hundreds” square in the Kindergarten yard, and painting the walls in 29A. If you want to help, they will always take more volunteers. They plan to start by 8:30 a.m.

IT’S THE HOME STRETCH!

Earth Week ~ Next week is Earth Week and students are encouraged to participate in fun activities. A flyer was sent home today. Please share this with your child, so he/she can participate in our activities. (Flyer)

Laker’s “Be a Champion…and Read” ~ The following students won two tickets to the Lakers game on Sunday, April 22nd: Bronson Gaunt, Devin Medhat, Collin Yi, Maddie Park, Nikki Pallis, Jazib Ahmed, Austin Green, Lahna Klein, Sally Moon, Anne Bayne, Shane Louriano, and Iris Hang. Congratulations.

PTA’s Ruby’s Restaurant Day ~ Wednesday, April 25th, is an opportunity for you to get a meal from Ruby’s located at the Avenue of the Peninsula Mall. Twenty percent of all proceeds will be donated to Walteria’s PTA.

WALTERIA’S FUN RUN

Fun Run ~ Tomorrow is PTA’s annual Fun Run, an event our students enjoy. 4th & 5th Graders will be running at 9:00; Preppy/Kindergarten & 1st graders at 9:45; 2nd & 3rd graders at 10:45. We hope to see you there! T-Shirt Fun Run colors Preppy/Kinder=Yellow; 1st grade = Green;

2nd grade=Navy; 3rd grade= Purple; 4th grade =Grey; 5th grade =Red

Walteria’s Science Fair ~ Staff voting to determine who will go on to the District level Science Fair occurs on Friday, March 23rd. If your child’s project is selected to represent Walteria, the Elementary District Science Fair will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Torrance High School. You will receive specific information about this event.

Walteria’s Bike Rodeo ~ Our Bike Rodeo is scheduled to occur on Wednesday, March 28th at 2:45 p.m. The Bike Rodeo is for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders only. Information about this event has been sent home. (Flyer)

Multicultural Night ~ More and more people are getting involved in this event, but there is still plenty of time to join it. This is a fun family event in which Walteria’s diversity is celebrated. Refer to the link for more specific information. (Flyer)
