What Will the Groundhog See Tomorrow?

Groundhog Day ~ According to folklore if it is cloudy the groundhog will leave its burrow signifying that winter will end soon. If it is sunny, the groundhog will retreat and six more weeks of winter will occur. Given our forecast for the next few days, I think we can manage six more weeks of winter.

Student Free Day ~There is no school on Friday. Also, the office will be closed because it is a furlough day for most classified staff.

Snow & Mad Science Fun ~ It is rescheduled and will occur on Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 12:00-3:00 p.m. Please see the flyer that was sent home today. Also, if you can contribute to the Bake Sale, that will be greatly appreciated. (Flyer, Bake Sale)

Multicultural Night ~ We had our first meeting last Thursday to plan this great family event that celebrates cultural diversity. We need more families to get involved, however.

Our Neighbors ~ There have been complaints from neighbors during the past few days of cars being parked in front of driveways. This occurs both in front of the school on Madison Street and behind us on Winlock. Also, blocking garages in the alley has been reported. I know it gets congested during drop off and pick up times, but please remember to follow all the procedures we have in place.

Drop-off and Pick-up Zones ~ Please do not park on our side of Madison Street from 8:00-9:30 a.m. or 2:00-3:30 p.m. per the signs posted. This disrupts the flow of traffic and is a safety hazard.

Torrance Education Foundation (TEF) ~ You most likely received an Annual Campaign flyer soon from TEF. TEF continues to enrich TUSD education by funding District prioritized needs within our schools. Please consider donating to this vital partner for TUSD. For more information about TEF, please visit TorranceEducationFoundation.org.

TEF is currently sponsoring a raffle in which someone will win a 2012 Lexus CT 200h donated by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. Each raffle ticket costs $30.00 with $20.00 of it going directly back to your child’s classroom. The raffle tickets must be into Torrance Education Foundation no later than March 16, 2012 for the drawing on March 23, 2012. (Letter, Flyer)

Science Fair ~ Walteria’s Science Fair will be held on Friday, March 23, 2012. All 4th and 5th grade students are expected to participate, but it is open to all grade levels. Winners from the various grade levels will be invited to the District Science Fair on April 5, 2012. Students in grades K-3 may obtain a Science Project Proposal and display information by accessing a link. All 4th and 5th grade students were given this information by their teacher. Please note that siblings and students from other grade levels may work on a project together. This will be a separate category with respect to selection of entries for the District Science Fair held on April 5, 2012. Since it is a requirement for all 4th and 5th grade students to complete a science project as part of their curriculum at Walteria, they are expected to turn in an individual one. Anything they would do with a sibling or student from another grade level would be in addition to their individual project. (K-3, 4-5)

Open Enrollment ~ Open Enrollment begins February 1 and goes until February 29, 2012. This a process that gives families an opportunity to switch their home school. Please see www.tusd.org to apply for open enrollment.

What’s Up?

Sports Day ~ Walteria’s Student Council has declared Friday, January 27th, as Sports Day. Please have your son/daughter wear their favorite team’s jersey!

Snow & Mad Science Fun ~ Even though it was anticipated that this event would occur last Saturday rain or shine, the forecast for more rain over a longer period of time caused concern that we would end up with slush rather than nice sledding mounds. As a result, this event is being rescheduled so watch for information about the day and time.

Important Reminders ~ Consistency in a child’s education is paramount to success. Ensuring that your child gets to school on time provides him/her the opportunity to access all instruction being provided. Additionally, planning family vacations around the school year schedule is recommended. Students miss a lot of curriculum and activities that support instruction when they are not in school.

If you have a child in Preppy or Kindergarten, please remember that grades 1-5 are in session longer. Playing outside of classrooms disrupts the education that is occurring. There are parks nearby that you can take you children to for playtime after school.

If you are picking up your child in a vehicle after school, please follow the “car gate” line down to the gate by the YMCA and have your child meet you there. We have this system in place to provide a safe way for children to be picked up by parents. Also, please do not park beyond that gate as our school bus needs to park there. Students who walk home are dismissed at the main gate. Please have your child meet you there.

SNOW & MAD SCIENCE AT WALTERIA!

Snow & Mad Science Fun ~ Saturday, January 21st, Walteria’s PTA will host the third annual snow and science family event at Walteria. Sledding and science experiments will happen from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. Please join us for fun with your family.

~ Rain or Shine this event will go on ~

Torrance Education Foundation (TEF) ~ This is a foundation that raises money to support our schools. Thanks to TEF, Walteria is wireless. Additionally, a small amount of Save our Schools (SOS) money was recently given to us and we used it to have Mrs. Bergen work three hours per week for 17 weeks providing extra curriculum support.

PTA Straw Ballot ~ A copy of the straw ballot for our 2012-2013 PTA was sent home last week. Please take a few minutes to look over the positions on PTA and consider participating in one or suggesting someone. Walteria has a long history of having a very active PTA and we want to continue that because our students benefit from the curriculum related activities provided through this association. Please turn it into the office by Friday, January 20, 2012. Thank you. (Ballot)

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights leader who believed in equality for all people. He was born on January 15, 1929, and was a nationally known for his pursuit to end racial segregation and racial discrimination. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his efforts with respect to these issues.

HERE’S TO A WONDERFUL 2012!

Conflict Managers ~ Mrs. Fanous, our counselor, and I have been training a small group of 4th and 5th grade students as Conflict Managers to help resolve issues during lunch recess. As of Tuesday, January 3, 2012, two Conflict Managers are on the playground from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m. with Mrs. Fanous or me to implement what we discussed in training sessions prior to our break. We currently have six pairs of students, but plan to grow this program.

Learning how to manage conflicts is an important life skill and having students work together towards positive resolution of issues is known to be beneficial. Of course, the Conflict Managers have been provided guidelines that include asking for adult intervention when warranted.

Our Modernization ~ As you may have noticed, the Kindergarten yard is close to being done. It will be two to three weeks before students can play on the grass, because the roots have to take hold. However, we hope to have them playing on the sand area and concrete soon by placing something around the grass to keep them off. There are other finishing touches, such as hopscotch being painted on the hard surfaces, etc. Hopefully, it will all come together soon.

The upper grade playground on the east side of our campus is slated to be done during a time when students are not in attendance.

ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS

Please help the Walteria PTA Historian keep track of the volunteer hours completed at our school.

Every year, the PTA Historian has the daunting task of tallying all the volunteer hours to include in the Unit Annual Report. The Walteria PTA would appreciate your help with this task. Please take a few minutes each month to email the number of volunteer hours you completed that month to our Historian, Yvonne Beck at

historian@walteriaelementary.org

As a “thank you” for taking the extra time to email your volunteer hours, your name will be included in the “Thank You” raffle held by the Walteria PTA at the end of each trimester. The first winner will be announced on January 13^th.

Please include your full name and contact information (either phone or email) when you submit your volunteer hours so we can get in touch with the winner of the raffle.
